Ubuntu is a free open-source operating system from Debian Family. In this tutorial, we wil explore how to install ubuntu server 18.04.
Prerequisites
- At least 2Ghz dual core cpu
- 4 GB Ram
- 25 GB hard disk
Download Ubuntu
We can download ubuntu from its offical download page. You can download desktop or server version as per your need. Once you have downloaded the ISO burn it to DVD or pen drive as per your convenance.
Install Ubuntu server 18.04
Once we have media in place, we can start with the installation process. Make sure you boot using the ubuntu media created by you. We will get below screen once server is booted from the ubuntu server iso.
On the “Select a language” screen, please select your preferred language, we will select English here and hit Enter.
On the next screen, please select your location, we will select India here and hit Enter.
To configure the keyboard, we will select “Yes” so that the installer automatically detect our keyboard layout. Please enter the key specified on the next screen to detect the keyboard. We will Select “NO” to configure the keyboard manually.
Select your preferred keyboard, we will select English (US) here and hit Enter key.
Select English (US) keyboard layout and hit Enter. On the next screen ubuntu will start loading the files and operating system required for installation.
Here we need to enter the hostname for our server which is required for Configuring the Network. Enter your required hostname and then hit Continue.
On the next screen, we can configure user and its password. Please add required user of your choice and hit Continue.
Please enter your password for the user you created in the last step and Reenter the password again on the next screen to confirm the password for your user.
Now we need to Partition the disk available on the server. We will use Guided partitioning method to create partition on our server.
Since we have only one disk attached to our server, we will select the same to proceed with our installation. This will erase the entire content of the disk. You if you have more disk attached to your server, please select the one on which you want to install the ubuntu operating system.
Select YES to write changes to the disk and create LVM partition on your selected disk.
Below screen prompts you with the generated partitions for your server. Select Yes and hit Enter. System will start installing the os on your hardware.
In the above screen, select your software’s that you want to install. we will select OpenSSH server and Continue.
Next we need to install Boot loader for our OS, select Yes and hit Continue
Now remove your bootable media from your server and reboot the newly installed ubuntu server by hitting Continue.
Finish installation and Reboot
Welcome to the login screen of your new ubuntu server.
